As a former student from Moore Public Schools, I felt compelled to partner up with The Westin Memphis Beale Street, and RedRover Sales Marketing to host a fundraiser for 200 Memphians to raise funds for the schools. We raised over $34,000 in donations, including gym equipment for my junior high school, Highland East.   The equipment was donated by Karen Wilder Fitness and shipped by Big League Movers (who donated 100% of their shipping services!!). Cash raised was donated to the Moore Public Schools Tornado Relief Fund to cover the needs of teachers and students impacted by the tornado. In all, there was $55M in total damage to the school system.   The three most badly damaged properties, Plaza Towers Elementary, Briarwood Elementary, and High East Junior High, are all still under construction.   Most other school properties have been repaired, and students are back in school. For those who have asked about my parents street, one home was beyond repair and was rebuilt completely. Two others were badly damaged and are almost completed.   Other repairs are complete. This is the dilemma most candidates face. Don’t panic. You can prepare for various types of questions, and I’ll give you a few hints later on. Most companies are using one or the other type: conventional questions or behavior-based questions; even a combination of them is likely. Behavior-based questions have a clear purpose: the idea is to focus on your past and to conclude that if you behaved in a certain way in the past, then that would be the way you’d behave in the future in a similar situation. So, this expectation is based on predictable future behavior. The interviewer wants to hear how you applied your skills and whether you’ll demonstrate your capabilities in the future. The interviewer wants to assess the entire picture about what you did, what your thought process was, and how you felt about a particular situation. Best way to answer these types of questions is via storytelling. Start describingâ€"in briefâ€"the background situation, and then proceed to describe what you did or the actions you took. Finally, highlight the result of your action and its benefit to the company. Because behavior-based questions can be endless, I suggest that you prepare for them by organizing your thoughts in themes. Remember that the interviewer is looking to val idate not only the skills mentioned in your résumé but perhaps alsoâ€"and even more importantâ€"your traits. Examples of themes are commitment, work ethic, problem solving, leadership, negotiation techniques, and dealing with adversity. To prepare for such themes, it’s best to write out in longhand some examples you could review before the interview and commit to short-term memory. In working on the examples, consider that the interviewer is more interested in the process than in the details of your stories. Rather, the interviewer wants to understand the reasoning that drove your actions: Why did you behave the way you did? And what skills did you have to use? You will immediately know whether you’re being asked a behavior-based question because such questions typically start with, “Tell me a time when . . . ” or “What has been your biggest . . . ” or “What is the toughest . . . ” or “Describe a situation when . . . ” or “What example can you cite that . . . ” Notice that many behavior-based questions include a superlative or something of a superlative value such as biggest, fastest, toughest, and the like. This might be intimidating. My advice is that when you’re asked such a question, you first think for two or three seconds and then face the interviewer and say, “Well, I’m not sure I can come up at the moment with the [insert the superlative], but here’s an example,” and then give the story. Behavior-based questions are not so difficult once you have half a dozen to a dozen examples, and you’ve had a chance to practice delivering them in a mock interview setting.

You see, in return for their dedication and hard work, I offered participants in the internship the opportunity to learn the best methods for identifying and pursuing a career path when they graduate. More importantly, I taught them the dos and don’ts of working in a business setting (i.e. how to communicate effectively, how to impress your boss, etc.) and many other things that will make them stand out amongst their peers in the workplace. In short, the goal was to give each one of them an advantage in the job market in exchange for the ir hours of service. So, unlike other employers who wish to hold on to their employees, I actually want to get rid of mine! That said, I’d like to introduce you to nine young professionals who I guarantee are going to make their future employers very, very happy: (Top Row - Left to Right) Tim â€" The best listener of the bunch, Tim is thoughtful and patient. His disposition is positive and consistent, making him the ideal person to deal with customer issues. Tim doesn’t seek the spotlight or crave recognition â€" he’s the ultimate team player and would be an asset to any client services team. Mark â€" From C-level executive to receptionist, Mark enjoys meeting people and connecting with them â€" he’s a natural networker. He’s driven to find a sales and marketing positions this spring when he graduates. In particular, he is fascinated with how companies brand and market themselves to customers. This natural curiosity makes him excel at coming up with new ideas for connecting with an audience. Greg â€" Sorry employers, you can’t have Greg! He was the team lead for the internship program this fall and graduated in December, but we couldn’t let him go. He’s officially Careerealism.com’s newest employee. Using his exceptional communication and organizational skills, Greg will be helping us expand our service offerings to college students and young professionals. Jon â€" An event and project management pro, his pleasant personality makes everyone around him feel at ease. He’s quite resourceful and reliable. He loves to brainstorm, but enjoys the follow through just as much. There’s no better person to put in charge of a task that involves impressing your clients. I could see him running marketing events with ease. (Second Row - Left to Right) Alex â€" Well-spoken, energetic and loves a challenge. She’s got excellent insight and is good at spotting potential roadblocks. She aspires to launch a career in PR which is perfect because she knows how to phrase things to capture interest. She’s also got a keen sense of how an audience will react to something â€" a trait necessary to succeed in PR. Meg â€" Organized and energetic, Meg knows how to collaborate in order to create great work. Teammates feel comfortable around her and aren’t afraid to share ideas. She knows how to pull together the efforts of others to deliver results. Also interested in PR, Meg is the perfect account manager who will have no problem building relationships with those who can help her company succeed. Kat â€" There’s nobody better to have on your team if you are looking for a polished, committed person who consistently delivers results that exceed expectations. Kat was voted by the interns as the one person they’d want most to have on their team. She has a reputation for excellence in all that she does, yet her humble-nature is what I love most. She hopes to get into media production when she graduates. I can already see her as a top production assistant at a major TV or radio station. Zhenya (a.k.a. Z) â€" With a quick wit and lots of energy, Z knows how to get things done. He asks great questions - the kinds others might be too embarrassed to ask themselves but want to know the answer too as well. He’s great at updating others on his progress and when he hits a snag, he always comes prepared with at least several ideas for working around it. A role in consultative selling would be ideal for him. Carly â€" The only English major of the bunch, she is a masterful copywriter who knows how to convey key points in just a few words. Her personality is engaging and the ideas seem to flow out of her like wine. Her attitude is fun but focused, which motivates her teammates to do the same. While she’d be a great journalist, I see her real strength in marketing because she can take an idea and run with it on many levels. There you have it.
